The Rise of the Global Electric Car Market

I’ll never say it enough; electric cars are coming!

Yeah, it’s now a real thing! And, I don’t know why, but most mechanics around me still seem to be in some sort of denial state. I don’t know if it’s powered by fear of change or fear of becoming obsolete as a mechanic. Or maybe it’s only wishful thinking that it will never really become mainstream since most mechanics chose the trade because of their love for speed, turbos, and the smell of fuel and burn tires, scents directly related to petrol-fuelled engines.

But whatever is your reason to still treat EVs as some kind of dream or utopia, you should definitely stop what you are doing and acknowledge the fact that electric vehicles will soon be a major part of the cars coming to your garage, and get some EV training!

As recently as 2012, there were only 100,000 electric cars sold worldwide. Last year, there were more than two million. Electric cars were often viewed with skepticism at first, not least because of poor battery life and a glaring lack of charging opportunities. Today, batteries are built to last and charging points are much more abundant, so customers are beginning to buy into the belief that electric cars are cheaper and easier to run. There’s also been a real shift towards environmental consciousness from the general populace in recent times, with people genuinely wanting to do their bit for the good of the planet.

It will be too late to think about training and certifications when electric cars are here…

(It is also worth mentioning that managers and shop owners are planning for the future and they already looking for EV certified mechanics to hire, which is not to overlook.)

Anyway, enough with the ranting. Take a look at this week’s infographic demonstrating the evolution of the worldwide electric car market.
