What Exactly Are Centronics Connectors?

They’re named after the team who created it, the Centronics Corporation, although the company was bought out in the 1980s.

Types Of Centronics Connectors
Centronics connectors are basically of two types: male and female connectors. Male connectors contain side latches with them that snap into the tabs present at the other side of female connectors. To send control signals and read the status information, these connectors tend to use 8 parallel data lines.
Standards Of the Connectors

However, with the development of new slots and peripherals, the IEE approved the further standards of communication for Centronics Connectors. For now, IEEE 1284 has specified five basic modes of operation that are as follows:

- Bite
- Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP)
- Enhanced Capability Port (ECP)
- Compatibility
Compatibility mode though the unidirectional mode is used for old laser printers. However, it can be used for bi-directional purposes after combination with the nibble mode. ECP is however used to transfer data bi-directionally. The connector gets attached with scanners and faxes. EPP, however, is used to transfer the data between computers and other peripherals.
