Porsche Mission-E or How To Raise The Bar
I don’t know about you but, when I decided to be an auto mechanic it was because of the sound of roaring engines, the smell of burnt tires and fuel, and let’s be honest, the first “Fast and Furious” movie had just been released. A couple of years later, during mechanic school, when we started to hear rumors about hybrids we were all a bit skeptical. Back then, electric cars were nothing more than big golf carts. The Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius killed the electric car before we even had the chance to dream about it. And for years, buying, driving or even working on anything that wasn’t fuel-powered was absolutely out of the question. When hybrids started to be a thing and that cars running on electricity seemed to be the obvious solution for the future, I remember telling myself I needed to look for a career change because the “fun” of being a car mechanic would soon be gone. No need to say that it all changed after my first test drive with a Tesla S P85D. Seriously, the 17″ screen, the automatic door handles, the literally “insane” acceleration mode, self-driving, etc. made me think that I was now working on cars coming straight from the future! I remember thinking about all those nights when I was still a kid where I would dream of driving the car from the movie “Demolition Man“. And then just as you thought electric cars couldn’t get better Porsche raises the bar with the Mission-E.
New-era for Porsche AG
In their latest press release, Porsche announced they are about to start producing the first 100 of what could be the next real challenger for Tesla model S. The Mission-E outputs 600 hp through an all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering drivetrain while having a range of more than 500 km, which would be already impressive for a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle. The engineers at Porsche found a way to equip the Mission-E with a 800 volt charger unit, which appears to actually be twice the power of today’s standard fast charge systems. Worth mentioning, the charging system is so effective, the batteries are charged back to 80% in only 15 minutes. Porsche is even talking about a charging system that could be set in the garage floor, charging the batteries via induction! The Mission-E is to be released by 2020 which is also when Mercedes-Benz predicted “the semi-truck of the future” to arrive. I just can’t say it enough, this is an amazing time to be an auto mechanic but most of us will all have to go back to school in the next five years, whether we like it or not.
Porsche legendary interior design
Porsche is well-known for its beautifully designed interior. And once again, they live up to the expectation. The interior design is breathtaking and instruments are all operated by eye-tracking and gesture control. Just take a look at the pictures below… enough said.
A clear direction for the future
According to their press release, Porsche AG will build a new paint shop and assembly plant in Stuttgart creating thousands of new jobs. They will also expand their existing engine factory to build electric motors, making a bold statement about the future of the brand.
In the race to the ultimate electric sports car, Porsche sure raises the bar with the Mission-E. It’s hard to say whether or not it will be a real competitor for Tesla since no price range has been given yet but judging by its look and feature, I think we can safely assume it will be much more expensive than the P90D. As for new video game consoles, I’ll just have to wait for them to release the new and improved Xbox so I can buy an older model at a discount price.
After almost a decade of automotive dullness (2005 to 2015 wasn’t that exciting automotive-wise IMHO) I just can’t wait to see what the future will bring us. Let us know what you think about Porsche and it’s new electric division and where the automotive industry is heading for the future.
